Report on a session about ‘Gender Awareness’ conducted in targeted schools in Uganda

Hello, this is Global Bridge Network!

This time, we would like to give a report about the ‘Gender awareness session’ conducted in months April and May 2017. The session was carried out for school students and teachers in the three respective targeted schools.

Why do you think this ‘Gender Awareness’ Session had been conducted!?

The reason is that, the women’s social status is still low in Uganda and less priority is put into girl’s education. The concept of gender inequality is sometimes common among school-teachers which in the long run may cause violence of women’s rights. Many women are also still vulnerable making it difficult for them to indulge in decision-making resulting to no reflection of women’s opinion. People have little knowledge concerning women’s rights, so when they face dangers of violence, they do not know how to handle them

Therefore, in our project, our targets are not only adolescent girls but also school-boys and teachers in order to make them understand the concept of gender equality which we believe might help in raising gender awareness. It has also been realized that, once for example boys understand gender related roles and responsibilities, they stop bullying girls who are in their menstruation periods, therefore implying that schools realized their role to support girl’s education. In addition to that, through sensitization like these sessions, girls have also learnt how to protect themselves and handle issues related to gender violence, which calls for more efforts concerning this issue.
